Gloucester Point, VA & Yorktown, VA

We grabbed a slip at York River Yacht Haven from November 7, 2022 thru November 17, 2022 waiting on a weather window to round Hatteras. This Suntex marina has a pretty decently stocked Marine store with a variety of basic items for repairing your boat. Additionally, a West Marine is also walking distance (1 mile?). It caters to mostly smaller boats, so don’t expect to find a lot of heavier line or blocks, for example.

The restaurant at York River Yacht Haven is a decent place to grab a drink or lunch or dinner. We ate there several times. The pool, while closed for the season, was large and looked pretty well-kept and clean. The pump-out at the marina had been out of order and, we were told, had been so for a while. Ultimately, we needed to go across the river to Yorktown and use the municipal marina pump out. Overall, I could see visiting there again although I would love to see marinas install and maintain pump outs more than they do for those mariners that are trying to do the right thing.

They’re closed on Tuesday, so we anchored just off the marina. It was well-protected and seemed to have enough space for a handful of 40ft+ boats. The anchorage and marina is surrounded by some pretty homes.

We rode our bikes across the Colman Memorial Bridge which is a toll bridge….it was a windy day and while the berm had plenty of space to ride, I consider us lucky we didn’t find a nail or a screw to flatten a tire. Yorktown, a historic Virginia town, is quite cool. It has a beautiful Civil War memorial park overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and has a decent selection of restaurants.

When we were there, there was a wine festival which, if there hadn’t been a cold front passing through, we would have bought tickets to enjoy.
